Installation of a protective paint and varnish transparent film on the car. PPF polyurethane film to protect the car paint from stones, marks and scratches.

Learn about the benefits of PPF and how it compares to cheaper options on the market.

Who’s never had their car paint fade, crack, peel, and scratch? All those signs are constant reminders of what can happen without proper vehicle care and protection.

It’s a good thing there are a few solutions for those who want to keep their cars looking pristine but don’t have time for a regular care routine.

Paint Protection Film (PPF) is one solution. In this article, we’ll cover the main features of PPF, talk about its benefits, and how to make the most of this protective accessory.

What is paint protection film (or PPF)?

PPF is essentially a protective film for car paint. But to understand the tech behind this film, we need to backtrack a little and look at some history. Let’s check it out?

The first PPF project was originally a tool designed for military use. During the Vietnam war (to be more precise), the US Department of Defense began getting frequent complaints of helicopter damage.

3M™ engineers were the experts they called to come up with a solution.

This textile and chemical giant was determined to solve the problem. They commissioned some of their most brilliant minds to develop a layer of protection as resistant as it was transparent and lightweight.

After making changes to the chemical structure of a super-resistant urethane film, 3M™ engineers developed a film that would hold against moderate surface damage from things like artillery shrapnel.

Besides being low-cost, relatively easy to apply and replace, it’s resistant to the wear caused by UV rays and common aviation fluids. This film was so successful that they soon adapted the technology for civilian vehicles.

Scotchgard™ Paint Protection Film Pro Series

3M™ designed and perfected PPF for automotive applications, resulting in the Scotchgard™ Paint Protection Film Pro Series. These films are 8 millimeters thick and protect the paint from rocks, insects, sand, keys, road salt, UV rays, and more.

Another advantage of Scotchgard™ is unique, self-healing technology that levels out minor scratches, even causing some to “disappear”. This without changing the color or design features of your car.

The protective film is exceptionally durable and guaranteed ten years of high performance under the harshest conditions.

Not used to keeping the same car for too long? Paint Protection Film Pro Series will add value to any vehicle.

That’s because of its clearcoat technology, which is highly stain-resistant, weather-resistant, and abrasion-resistant, which keeps it looking as new as the day you bought it.

Paint protection film vs. Vinyl: which to choose?

It’s easy to overlook the differences between PPF and Vinyl. Here’s a breakdown of what sets these unique products apart.

Vinyl Wrap

Vinyl Wrap is relatively thick, making it easy to install, and you get that extra coverage. But it’s not transparent.

On the other hand, PPF isn’t a type of shade. It’s usually crystalline, much lighter, and “self heals” when it comes to minor scratching.

Paint Protection Film

It’s clear when comparing the two that Paint Protection film is lighter and much thinner. You can get it in a light or colored shade too.

Another advantage PPF has over Vinyl Wrap is its combination of surface protection and “self-healing” properties. Vinyl is limited in both.

While Vinyl offers some paint protection, it’s normally used for decorative or marketing purposes.

In contrast, PPF is transparent armor that won’t cover up the shine of your car.

How much does full PPF cost?

The cost of getting PPF for the front of your car is estimated between$1200 and  $2800 It all depends on how many panels you plan to cover and the condition of your vehicle.

Now, if you’re shielding the entire bodywork of your car, paint protection can cost anywhere from$6000 to $9000.

That being said, it’s worth considering that prices vary depending on the finish and protection level you opt for.

Is PPF really worth it?

It can be! Paint Protection Film is very beneficial if your car spends more time exposed to the elements than in the shelter of a garage. But some vehicle owners may feel tempted to choose lower-cost films or apply one themselves.

A low-quality film application can damage the outside of your car, costing you more in the long run than if you had opted for a more expensive PPF.

How long does paint protection film last?

The longevity of PPF is around 5-7 years, depending on its composition and regular maintenance. Careful drivers may be able to avoid minor accidents, which is a contributing factor as well. But you can expect some benefits to gradually lose effectiveness, such as self-healing. That’s a natural consequence of wear and tear.
